A lot goes into planning an outdoor photo session including the time of day.  In some cases, I will recommend early mornings, especially for families with little ones.  But there is just something magical that only happens at sunset golden hour.  And our Winnipeg prairie sunsets are some of the best.

Golden hour is the period shortly before sunset when the sun is just above the trees or horizon and a golden glow takes over.

The magic only lasts for a few minutes, so be ready!

Tips for shooting at golden hour:

  • Plan Ahead: Research the exact time of golden hour in Winnipeg to maximize your photography session.
  • Scout Locations: Choose family-friendly spots in Winnipeg that offer beautiful natural backdrops.  I have a few fave spots.
  • Utilize Soft Light: Position your family so the soft, diffused light illuminates their faces without harsh shadows.
  • Experiment with Angles: Capture images from different angles to make the most of the golden light.
  • Engage with Your Family: Encourage candid moments to capture authentic interactions and emotions.
  • Be Mindful of Color: Incorporate warm colors in clothing to complement the golden hues of sunset.
  • Watch for lens flare: Every camera and lens have unique lens flares.  Some are magical.  Some will cover your subject.
  • Look for pockets of light: Find the spots between the trees or surroundings that let in limited streams of light.
  • Keep It Fun: Ensure the family enjoys the session; laughter leads to the best candid shots in the golden hour light.
