A smash and splash session is a fun, playful way to celebrate your baby turning one. These sessions include clean studio portraits, a cake smash, and a warm splash bath, all designed to capture genuine expressions and milestone memories in a relaxed studio environment.
A little preparation goes a long way in helping your baby feel comfortable and happy during their cake smash photography session.
We will begin your session with 1-2 clean portrait setups before introducing the cake. I will customize the setups to enhance the outfits you have chosen.
- Please bring 2-3 outfits for this portion (or you're welcome to use the studio wardrobe if available)
- After clean portraits, we will move directly into the cake smash
- I do not provide clothing for the smash, so please bring something comfortable and could possibly get stained depending on cake colors
AVOID itchy or fussy clothing - yes the frills, tulle and layers are cute, but babies have very sensitive skin, and comfort is key.
- Book your session with nap time in mind (we want rested and not grumpy)
- Bring snacks your baby loves (VERY IMPORTANT)
- Have favorite songs or shows ready on your phone
Some cake colors photograph better than others:
- Bold and dark colors are not recommended
- Dark dyes can stain the skin and clothing
- Neutral, pastel, or soft tones photograph best and easiest on sensitive skin
Please allow me to get your baby's attention as much as possible. I want that eye contact with the camera. Trust me, you will too.
We will finish the session with a splash bath both for photos and for clean up.
- most babies love this part, though some don't and that is okay!
- either way we need to get them cleaned up
- if your baby has allergies please inform me so I do not use bubble bath
In the weeks leading up to your session, encourage your baby to feed themselves, no matter how messy or unproductive it gets.
- Babies who are primarily spoon fed often struggle with touching food in front of them
- If your baby does have a favorite utensil, please bring it!
- It is very common for babies to hesitate with getting messy, since we usually discourage it at home
I know this can feel stressful for some parents, but when babies are comfortable going all-in on the cake, the photos are so much better. More expressions, more interaction, and more personality.
