What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in Winnipeg: A Photographer's Guide

Fall family photos are one of my favourite ways to capture families in Winnipeg. The changing leaves, warm colours, prairie grasses, and beautiful light give us so much to work with—and your clothing should complement that setting without becoming the focus of the photographs.

When families ask me what they should wear for their fall family photography session, my advice is actually pretty simple: coordinate, don't match; dress for the weather; and choose comfort over fussy styling.

You don't need perfectly styled outfits or a suitcase full of accessories. The goal is to look like yourselves, feel comfortable, and be able to move, play, cuddle, and enjoy your time together.

FALL FAMILY SESSION INFORMATION

Start With 2–3 Colours

Rather than choosing completely matching outfits, start with a palette of 2–3 colours that complement the fall season.

For example:

Burnt orange, brown, and cream
Burgundy, black, and navy
Olive, cream, and brown
Rust, beige, and denim

Once you've chosen your colour palette, let each family member interpret those colours in their own way.

One person might wear a cream sweater, another might wear brown, and another might incorporate burnt orange. The outfits coordinate without looking like everyone was dressed in the exact same colour.

The goal is coordination, not matching.

A little variation makes the photographs feel more natural and timeless.

My tip: avoid bright colors like neons. Hold the color up under your chin in bright light. Those bright tones can reflect colour onto your skin, which can be difficult to correct in photographs and is often unflattering.

Avoid Busy Patterns and Large Logos

Simple clothing tends to photograph beautifully, especially when we're surrounded by the natural colours and textures of fall.

I generally recommend avoiding:

Large logos or graphics
Very busy patterns
Multiple competing prints
Clothing with lots of distracting details

If one person really wants to wear a pattern, that's okay. Just keep the rest of the outfits a little simpler so everything works together.

My tip: A plaid shirt that includes the palette can tie in beautifully with solid colors that rest of the family is wearing.

Think about adding visual interest through texture—knits, denim, corduroy, sweaters, jackets, and other fabrics can add depth without making the photograph feel busy.

Dress for Winnipeg's Unpredictable Fall Weather

One of the most important things to remember about fall family photos in Winnipeg is that fall weather can change quickly. I have seen seasons where it is +30 degrees in late September. I have also seen snow in early October.

Come prepared for the possibility of different temperatures throughout your session.

Layers are your friend.

A sweater, cardigan, jacket, vest, or other removable layer gives you options. If the temperature drops, you can add a layer. If the afternoon turns out warmer than expected, you can take one off.

And don't assume that because we're taking fall photos, it will automatically be cold. Winnipeg can have surprisingly warm fall days, and being dressed too warmly can leave everyone hot and uncomfortable. Let's face it, no one looks comfortable when sweaty.

Your clothing should work for the actual weather—not just the season on the calendar.

Make Sure You Can Move

This is family photography, not a formal portrait where everyone stands perfectly still.

During your session, you may be sitting on the ground, walking, bending down, picking up your children, cuddling, or playing together. Kids may run, explore, and ask to be picked up.

Choose clothing that allows you to move comfortably and naturally.

If you're wearing a dress, make sure you can sit comfortably in it. If you're wearing pants, make sure you can move easily. If you're wearing shoes that look great but hurt your feet after ten minutes, they're probably not the best choice for your session. You can always bring comfortable slip-on shoes for walking between locations.

Your outfit should let you participate in the photographs—not make you worry about your clothing throughout the session.

Choose Comfort Over Fussy Styling

This may be my biggest piece of advice.

Choose comfort over fussy styling.

If you're constantly adjusting a shirt, pulling down a dress, worrying about a waistband, or feeling uncomfortable in your shoes, that can make it harder to relax in front of the camera.

And relaxed is exactly what we want.

Some of my favourite family photographs happen when everyone is interacting naturally—when a child is being cuddled, siblings are laughing, parents are walking hand-in-hand, or everyone is simply enjoying being together.

Your clothes should support those moments rather than get in the way of them.

You Don't Need a Lot of Props or Accessories

When you're planning an outdoor family photography session, it can be tempting to bring a bag full of props and accessories.

You really don't need to.

The natural beauty around us is already part of the photograph. Winnipeg's fall colours, trees, grasses, leaves, and beautiful outdoor locations provide plenty of visual interest without needing to add more.

And there's a practical reason to pack light too.

We move between locations during outdoor sessions, and the more things you bring, the more you have to carry—and the easier it is to accidentally leave something behind.

Keep the extras to a minimum and bring only what you genuinely need. The focus should stay on your family and the environment around you, not on a collection of props.

A Simple Formula for Fall Family Photo Outfits

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the idea of choosing everyone's clothing, keep it simple:

Choose 2–3 complementary colours.

Let each person wear those colours differently.

Avoid busy patterns and large logos.

Add layers so you're prepared for changing weather.

Choose clothing you can comfortably move, sit, and play in.

Pack light and let the natural beauty of the location do the work.

You don't need everyone's outfits to be perfect. You just need them to work together.

Most Importantly, Come Ready to Be Yourselves

Your family photos don't need to look like they came from a magazine.

They should look like your family.

Come dressed in clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Wear things you can move in. Be prepared for the weather. Don't worry about bringing a dozen props.
