My 4 Favourite Photo Locations in South Winnipeg

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“Where should we do our photo session?”

The truth is, Winnipeg has no shortage of beautiful parks, but after years of photographing families, graduates, couples and pets, I’ve found myself returning to the same four locations again and again.

Why?

Because they’re reliable, beautiful in different seasons, and—most importantly—they work incredibly well for evening sessions. Since almost all of my outdoor sessions take place during the last couple of hours before sunset, I look for locations that have open western light. That soft golden evening sun creates beautiful backlighting and the dreamy look you see throughout my portfolio.

Here are my four favourite outdoor photography locations in recommend while staying in the south end of Winnipeg (or close driving distance) and why.

St Vital Park

Truthfully, St Vital Park is one of the first parks I started to use regularly way back when I started my business 15+ years ago. It is just tried and true.

It used to be one of those spots that was always crawling with photographers, but it has become more of a sleeper spot the last few years and I love that.

It offers an incredible variety of backgrounds without needing to walk very far. Mature trees, open grassy areas, flower garden, winding pathways, and plenty of room to spread out mean almost every session ends up looking unique. I have a few spots that need some walking to get to but offer hardscape variety that most photographers miss.

My Tip: Explore the boat launch and toboggan slide areas.

Henteleff Park

This was once a secret spot but has become a popular photography location in Winnipeg the last few years, and for good reason.

It has a much more natural feel than many city parks. The forest trails, riverbank, and tall trees create a peaceful setting that photographs beautifully. It has so much variety and species of plants and trees.

The evening sunlight filters through the trees in a way that creates some of my favourite images of the year.

This park is volunteer run by the Henteleff Park Foundation and should be treated with care. Stay on the paths to avoid damaging or disturbing plants and wildlife.

My Tip: Avoid this location in peak season because it does get very busy and parking is limited. And wear walking shoes. Paths are gravel or chipped wood.

The Forks & Esplanade Riel Footbridge

If you’re looking for something a little different, The Forks offers an urban backdrop while still incorporating plenty of green space.

Historic buildings, interesting architecture, pathways, river views and the iconic Winnipeg skyline all help create a session that feels modern without losing warmth. It has so many stunning spots and views of Winnipeg.

My tip: The top floor of the parkade is one of my favourites to get above the crowds and have the city skyline as a backdrop. But you have to include the Esplanade Riel bridge.

It is such a fun location for walking and talking between photo spots. And in true Winnipeg fashion, you never know what you will see.

Charlie May Flower Farm

If you’re dreaming about flowers, this is hard to beat, and it is a short drive just south of the Winnipeg city limits.

Charlie May Flower Farm offers seasonal flower gardens that create a completely different look from a traditional park. I have booked this location for the last couple of summers and the blooms are unmatched. The love and care that goes into this flower farm shows.

Because it’s a working farm, photography sessions are booked in advance and follow farm guidelines. (Charlie May Farm⁠)

This location is only available to book by professional photographers and the flower gardens are not pet friendly.

My Tip: End of summer is my favorite here when everything is lush and full. The surrounding ares are open field so golden hour is best very close to sunset.

Honestly…there isn’t one “best” location.

The best location depends on your family, your vibe and the look you’re hoping for. Sometimes it is as simple as convenience, especially with little ones.
