If you’ve started looking for a Winnipeg newborn photographer, you’ve probably noticed one thing pretty quickly: newborn sessions aren’t exactly quick.
And that’s completely intentional.
One of the first questions I hear is:
“How long will we be at the studio?”
The short answer? Usually 1 to 2.5 hours (depending on the session type).
The longer answer? We take exactly as long as your baby needs.
Adults can usually power through a photo session. Babies… not so much.
Newborns need time to eat, cuddle, settle, stretch, and occasionally let everyone know they have very strong opinions about being swaddled.
That’s why I never book newborn sessions back-to-back or try to rush through a checklist of poses. A relaxed baby almost always leads to beautiful portraits.
And a relaxed family makes the experience so much more enjoyable.
This is probably the biggest reason newborn sessions take longer than many people expect.
Your baby’s comfort and safety will always come before getting “just one more photo.”
If your baby needs a feeding, we stop.
If they need cuddles, we stop.
If they’re telling us they’ve had enough of one pose, we move on. I will explain every step of the way if I feel baby needs a break or even if baby is simply done.
There is never a moment where I’m thinking, “Let’s hurry.”
Instead, I’m watching your baby’s cues and adjusting the session around them.
After 15+ years of photographing newborns, I’ve learned that patience is one of the most important pieces of creating beautiful portraits. Knowing when to switch plans and have backup ideas comes with handling thousands of tiny humans.
The best newborn images often happen between the planned moments.
Maybe your baby falls into the deepest sleep after a feeding.
Maybe they give us the sweetest little stretch.
Maybe they’re wide awake for a few minutes and make perfect eye contact with the camera.
Those aren’t moments you can schedule.
They’re moments you wait for.
And they’re usually worth every extra minute.
And yes, if a specific pose or idea is a "must have", I will always put in the time and effort to make it happen.
A typical newborn session includes:
Some babies sleep through almost everything (these are rare)
Others like to supervise the entire session. In this case I will switch to poses and props that allow prioritize safety for those alert moments. The hands and feet flail, the eyes wander and you would be surprised how strong a two week old awake baby can be. Some props and poses are not ideal for that.
Both are completely normal. Both I am prepared for.
Not at all.
Believe it or not, some of my favourite images come from babies who are wide awake for part of their session.
Years of experience have taught me how to work with every personality, whether your baby is sound asleep, alert, or somewhere in between.
The goal isn’t to force your baby into a schedule.
The goal is to create beautiful portraits while respecting exactly who they are that day.
I have a full blog just on this topic: What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep?
Those posed, curled up newborn images are ideally done when baby is under two weeks old. But this is not an option for some for a variety of reasons. Sometimes baby or mom needs more time in the hospital. Often first time parents don't realize just how fast those two weeks fly by and contact me later. That is okay!
I have swaddled and a more relaxed "timeless" options for babies who may be more alert and less curly. These options are shorter and easier on both baby and families.
A swaddled newborn session is usually only 45-60 minutes total.
When you book a newborn session with me, you’re not just booking someone to press a shutter.
You’re booking years of experience reading newborn cues, working patiently, and creating a calm environment where parents can finally take a breath.
There is no countdown clock.
No rushing.
No pressure.
Just a warm studio, plenty of patience, and a session built entirely around your newest little person.
Because the safest session is almost always the slowest one.
And in my experience, the most beautiful portraits come when everyone—especially baby—gets to set the pace.
If you’re looking for a Winnipeg newborn photographer who values timeless portraits, a relaxed experience, and your baby’s safety above everything else, I’d love to welcome you into my St. Boniface studio. Together we’ll create beautiful images while letting your little one take the lead.
