4 Reasons I Recommend NOT Doing Graduation Photos on Your Grad Day

My 4 reasons why you should NOT schedule your grad portraits on your graduation day

A little planning and a few tips can lead to a much better portrait experience.

Graduation day is exciting, but it is also one of the busiest days of the season. Between ceremonies, family plans, and limited time, trying to squeeze in portraits can add unnecessary pressure. For students who want beautiful, relaxed images, I often recommend scheduling graduation photos on a separate day. And for parents, it takes a mental load off the rush of grad day.

1. You will not feel rushed

On grad day, there is usually a schedule to keep. When you are watching the clock, it is harder to settle in, adjust your cap and gown, and take your time with natural expressions. A dedicated session gives you space to breathe and enjoy the process. In short, it is so much less stress for everyone involved.

2. Winnipeg weather

Need I say more.  This June we have seen temperature ranges from 8 to nearly 40 degrees. Oh, then throw in week long storms, tornado warnings and we even had a dust storm.  In cases of terrible weather, we simply reschedule.

3. Location

Winnipeg has some beautiful locations this time of year, but it is also peak busy time at popular locations like The Legislative Building and Assiniboine Park.  Think of how many schools are holding grads in the same week.  And there are line ups and groups everywhere trying to get that one key shot. Feeling relaxed and calm can be challenging when so many extra eyes are on you that do not need to be there.

4. LIGHT

This is probably my number one reason.  If you want those dreamy golden hour images or a specific location where the light hits just right at a certain time, scheduling around that limited "free time" window on grad day is not ideal.  Mid day light is harsh (and hot). I will always push for early morning or later evening.  All of this work has gone into this grad portrait experience, I truly want to be able to deliver the best results possible.

If you want graduation portraits that feel thoughtful and refined, a separate session is often the smarter choice. At Sunny S-H Photography, I focus on capturing real expressions and individualized moments so you can celebrate this milestone with confidence.
